What Orinda Buyers Should Know About Orinda Intermediate School
When buyers start researching schools in Orinda, the conversation often focuses on the bookends: which elementary school serves a particular neighborhood and, of course, Miramonte High School.
But there is an important part of the Orinda school experience in between that buyers, especially those moving here from San Francisco, the Peninsula, or elsewhere in the Bay Area may know much less about: Orinda Intermediate School, or OIS. I think it deserves a closer look.
I’ve experienced Orinda schools not only as a local Realtor, but as a parent and longtime school volunteer. My own children attended OIS, where I served as OIS Parents’ Club President for two years and Parliamentarian for one year, and today I serve as Miramonte Parents’ Club President. That perspective has given me a front-row view of how the different stages of Orinda’s public-school system connect.
One Middle School Brings Orinda Together
The Orinda Union School District includes four elementary schools- Del Rey, Glorietta, Sleepy Hollow and Wagner Ranch- and one middle school.
Once students reach sixth grade, those elementary-school communities come together at Orinda Intermediate School for grades 6 through 8. That makes OIS a somewhat unique piece of the Orinda experience. Buyers often spend a great deal of time comparing elementary attendance areas when considering different neighborhoods, but by middle school, students throughout the district are coming together in one place. For someone trying to understand what living in Orinda may look like over time, that is useful context.
What the OIS Data Shows
According to GreatSchools, Orinda Intermediate currently has a 10/10 rating, serves approximately 822 students in grades 6–8, and reports a 93% regular attendance rate, compared with 81% statewide. GreatSchools also highlights OIS for a lower student-teacher ratio than the California average and support for students with IEPs and English learners. The school offers a variety of academic and extracurricular programs as well, from MathCounts and leadership to theater, athletics, and WEB (Where Everyone Belongs), its middle-school transition and peer-support program.
As with any school-rating website, I always encourage buyers to look beyond a single number. Ratings change, different families value different things, and test scores are only one piece of understanding a school. The district and school websites are great places to explore programs, curriculum, student support, enrollment information, and current data directly.
Why the “Middle” Matters When Buying in Orinda
For buyers considering a long-term move to Orinda, I think it is helpful to understand the entire educational path, not simply the elementary school or high school. Middle school represents three important years, and OIS is the common link between Orinda’s elementary schools and Miramonte High School for many local students. It is also one of those details that can be easy to miss when researching Orinda online.
A home search here can become very street-specific very quickly. Buyers are comparing commute routes, lot usability, privacy, walkability, proximity to downtown, BART, sports and activities, neighborhood feel- and, when schools are important to them, attendance boundaries and educational programs. Understanding how the pieces fit together can make those comparisons much more meaningful.
A Local Perspective Can Help
This is one of the reasons I love helping buyers understand Orinda beyond the listing photos and bedroom count. There are nuances to our neighborhoods that aren’t always obvious online. Two homes a mile apart can offer very different settings, commute patterns, lot characteristics and everyday experiences. The same is true when researching schools: knowing what questions to ask and where to find reliable information matters.

It’s to help buyers understand their options, connect them with objective resources, and give them the local real estate context they need to make that decision for themselves.
